About the Role

The Emergency Management Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and supporting Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation’s collective preparedness for, response to, and recovery from emergencies and disasters as well as supporting the design and recommendations for governance. The incumbent will oversee the development, administration and implementation of the VGFN Emergency Management Program.  The Emergency Management Coordinator will primarily be responsible for working with all VGFN departments and leadership to support the coordination of assets and resources to manage emergencies and disasters. The incumbent will also work with other First Nations, territorial and federal government and relevant agencies to assess risk and coordinate planning, response and recovery for emergencies affecting the community of Old Crow and the VGFN Traditional Territory. The position will be primarily based on the Old Crow. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Emergency Management Coordinator’s responsibilities include but are not limited to;

  • Developing emergency management policies, plans, and programs
  • Conducting risk assessments and mitigation strategies
  • Coordinating training and exercises for staff and partner agencies
  • Facilitating communication and coordination during emergencies
  • Managing resources and logistics for emergency response
  • Planning and implementing post-disaster recovery efforts
  • Ensuring compliance with regulations and reporting on preparedness efforts
  • Continuously improving emergency management policies and procedures
  • Providing oversight and guidance to staff
  • Monitoring program performance and participating in recruitment and selection
  • Engaging in professional development and collaborating with emergency management practitioners.

  • Flexible Work Hours: Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation offers flexible working hours. Employees may choose to work 65, 70, 75, or 80 hours biweekly (some guidelines will apply).
  • 4% Northern Community Remoteness Allowance for employees residing in Old Crow full-time.
  • 4% Northern Travel Allowance for employees residing in Old Crow full-time.
  • 4 weeks’ vacation to start plus two weeks paid time off over the Christmas season.

What You Bring:
  • A grade 12 diploma or a certificate, diploma or bachelor’s degree in public administration, business administration, emergency management or any other relevant education and training. 
  • 0 – 3 years of experience in emergency management, project management, social work or a similar role.
  • Experience with project management and the ability to manage large and small projects from pre-planning to implementation to evaluation. 
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
  • Experience working with Citizens and Indigenous knowledge holders to integrate Traditional Knowledge and culture into plans and programs
  • Knowledge of emergency management theories and practices.
  • Knowledge of computer software, including word processing, database, e-mail, and communications programs.
  • Support, mentorship and training will be provided to strengthen technical skills and knowledge related to emergency management, and to support the successful candidate to gain experience in the Key Performance Areas.
