About the Role
The Heritage Interpreter provides visitor services at John Tizya Centre (JTC), organizing presentations, providing tours, creating exhibits and programs, researching and collecting exhibit materials and maintenance of exhibits. The position assists the supervisor in developing funding proposals, programming budgets and work plans. This position interacts with the general public constantly. Reporting to the Heritage Manager, the Heritage Interpreter’s responsibilities include but are not limited to;
- Managing the day-to-day services of the John Tizya Centre (JTC) including activities, administration, marketing, budgets, and visitor relations.
- Providing opportunities for JTC visitors to discover, appreciate, and enjoy cultural resources to understand their significance locally, within Yukon and Canada. Engaging with visitors directly and leads interpretive tours to showcase exhibitions on display.
- Maintaining long term relationships with the community by creating engagement opportunities such as workshops and presentations to promote cultural elements. Generating marketing materials to promote and inform the public of the center’s activities.
- Planning and organizing exhibits to facilitate public access and showcase Vuntut Gwich’in heritage in a way that maximizes enjoyment and understanding. Collecting inventory and materials. Conducting historical research and remains up to date on developments to inform knowledge transfer.
- Maintaining a safe and clean facility to ensure the health and safety of colleagues and visitors.
- Maintaining visitor information and other relevant statistics and preparing documents to report access and utilization of the JTC center and its services, and to inform decisions and program improvements.
- Supporting the Manager to develop program work plans to achieve objectives in alignment with the VGFN strategic plan. Identifying ideas and making recommendations to promote the transfer of cultural knowledge and awareness.
- Performing administrative functions such as reviewing documents, maintaining filing systems, and compiling data and reports on monthly activities.
What We Offer
- $36.57 - $54.85 per hour/per annum Band 1 (Based on education & experience)
- Flexible Work Hours: Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation offers flexible working hours. Employees may choose to work 65, 70, 75, or 80 hours biweekly (some guidelines will apply).
- 4% Northern Community Remoteness Allowance for employees residing in Old Crow full-time
- 4% Northern Travel Allowance for employees residing in Old Crow full-time
- 4 weeks’ vacation to start plus two weeks paid time off over the Christmas season
- A very healthy extended benefits package
- 10 days sick pay per year
- 10 days paid special/personal leave per year

What You Bring:
- The ideal candidate will have completed Grade 12 or equivalency combined with post-secondary coursework in marketing, tourism, cultural studies or a related discipline.
- at least one year experience in program delivery or equivalent experience.
- have above average communication skills as well as excellent interpersonal, public relations skills and ability to multi-task.
- Knowledge and understanding of Vuntut Gwitchin traditions and values including understanding Vuntut Gwitchin history, culture and traditions is a requirement.
