About the Role

The Justice Coordinator supports and supervises clients that are diverted from the Territorial Courts to the Old Crow Justice Committee. The Justice Coordinator communicates clients rights and responsibilities, guides them through the processes and acts as a liaison between the case management team and community agencies. The position will primarily be based on the Old Crow. Reporting to the Health, Social & Recreation Director, the Justice Coordinator’s responsibilities include but are not limited to;

  • Supporting clients diverted from the courts to Old Crow by determining client eligibility for alternate approaches to sentencing. Guiding clients and victims to navigate processes.
  • Supporting offender placement in the community work service program, monitoring and reporting offender performance to probation officers in Whitehorse. Referring offenders to other resources such as legal aid lawyers or native court workers in Whitehorse. 
  • Liaising with counsellors, RCMP, Crown, defense and court personnel during the alternate sentencing process and attends court sessions in support of and to speak on behalf of clients. Mediating between affected parties to settle disputes. 
  • Monitoring and ensuring clients in the program are adhering to the plan and assisting clients to identify additional support such as housing, health care, social assistance, and education. Facilitating involvement with the agencies to access support.  
  • Assisting the Old Crow citizens by organizing meetings, preparing documentation for or on behalf of the citizens, and attending meetings. Identifying and orienting citizens and liaising between the justice system and clients/victims/ communities to provide feedback. 
  • Assisting the Director to prepare the annual operating budget and relevant funding proposals along with final reports for funders.   
  • Administering the Native Worker contribution agreement with Yukon Government by managing funds and submitting reports as required. Collecting fines on behalf of the court.  
  • Preparing and participating in negotiations for individual justice administration in Old Crow that includes traditional justice methods. Monitoring justice methods that are implemented and recommending changes as necessary. 
  • Completing administrative functions including maintaining confidential client files, researching, and compiling information; supporting the department to develop work plans, processes, and procedures.  
What We Offer
  • $56.00 - $68.45 per hour/per annum (Based on education and experience)
  • Flexible Work Hours: Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation offers flexible working hours. Employees may choose to work 65, 70, 75, or 80 hours biweekly (some guidelines will apply).
  • 4% Northern Community Remoteness Allowance for employees residing in Old Crow full-time.
  • 4% Northern Travel Allowance for employees residing in Old Crow full-time.
  • 4 weeks’ vacation to start plus two weeks paid time off over the Christmas season. 
  • A very healthy extended benefits package.
  • 10 days sick pay per year.
  • 10 days paid special/personal leave per year.

What You Bring:
  • Certificate or diploma in a social or justice related field, or an equivalent combination of experience training.  
  • Experience navigating criminal justice and rehabilitation systems.
  • Experience contributing to and following individual case management plans. 
  • Experience building partnerships and networks with community resources.
  • Experience working with indigenous populations is an asset.
  • Support, mentorship and training will be provided to strengthen technical skills and knowledge related to social or justice support, and to support the successful candidate to gain experience in the Key Performance Areas.
