About the Role
Reporting to the Community Services Manager, the position performs preventative and on-demand maintenance and minor repairs on the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation (VGFN) vehicle asset pool (e.g., trucks, snowmachines, boats, quads) and maintains a relevant inventory of parts and materials.
You will bring efficiencies and contribute to the responsive abilities of our team and will provide on-the-job mentorship and direction to develop other members of the team.
What You Will Do
- Maintains and repairs VGFG assets including trucks, snowmachines, quads and boats.
- Inspects and conducts routine maintenance work (replacing fluids, lubricating parts, tire changes etc.) aiming to vehicle functionality and longevity.
- Schedules future maintenance sessions and advises users on good vehicle use.
- Repairs or replaces broken or dysfunctional parts and fixes issues (e.g. leaks).
- Provides accurate estimates (cost, time, effort) for a repair or maintenance job.
- Maintains records of work performed for each piece of equipment.
- Maintains work space, equipment and tools in good condition.
- Maintains and services tools and equipment for other departments as directed.
- Anticipates the need for vehicle maintenance materials and plans accordingly to ensure inventory is available for scheduled projects.
- Follows standard operating procedures and safety processes as relevant to the assignment and completes workplace incident reports immediately if an accident occurs. Communicates any safety concerns to the Manager.
- From time to time, during slower workdays, performs miscellaneous duties across the department as determined and assigned by the Director.
- Adherence to vehicle code requirements, safe work practices and safety legislation.
- Effective and safe use of hand and power tools.
- Completes assigned tasks effectively and on schedule.
- Interactions with colleagues and the public are positive, helpful, and professional.
- The VGFN Standards of Conduct are modeled and promoted.
What You Bring
- Certified Mechanic after completion of a heavy equipment/ automotive/ or related program.
- An in-depth understanding and deep appreciation for Indigenous People and their history, culture, traditions, and languages.
- A strong desire to uplift and support our community.
- Experience working in an Indigenous northern community is an asset.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience with working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and electronic components of vehicles as well as diagnostic systems and methods.
- Experience in heavy equipment, auto maintenance and repairs.
- Experience maintaining a relevant equipment and material inventory.
- Experience using associated tools and equipment.
- Knowledge of workplace safety with a willingness to observe all safety precautions.
Working Conditions
- Work takes place indoors at warehouse site location, although emergency work may be conducted outside in the elements (summer heat, winter cold).
- This position requires the incumbent to be physically fit. Moderate and frequent activity including lifting, walking, standing and bending.
- Exposure to power tools and auto/mechanical equipment, dust, odours, oil, fumes, noise which can cause injury, illness, or irritation to the senses. Personal protective equipment is required.
What We Offer
- $36.57 - $54.85 per hour (Based on education and experience)
- Flexible Work Hours: Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation offers flexible working hours. Employees may choose to work 65, 70, 75, or 80 hours biweekly (some guidelines will apply)
- 4% Northern Community Remoteness Allowance for employees residing in Old Crow full-time
- 4% Northern Travel Allowance for employees residing in Old Crow full-time
- 4 weeks vacation to start plus two weeks paid time off over the Christmas season

- 10 days sick pay per year
