About the Role

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Education Director advances Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation’s (VGFN) jurisdiction over community education. This role manages and expands programs that support the academic and cultural growth of all people. The Director collaborates with the First Nations School Board (FNSB) and community committees to implement Section 17 agreements, aligning the education system with VGFN’s mission, values and goals.

  • Flexible Work Hours: Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation offers flexible working hours. Employees may choose to work 65, 70, 75, or 80 hours biweekly (some guidelines will apply).
  • 4% Northern Community Remoteness Allowance for employees residing in Old Crow full-time 
  • 4% Northern Travel Allowance for employees residing in Old Crow full-time

What You Will Do:
Leadership and Management:
  • Oversee the daily operations of educational programs and staff, ensuring the alignment of activities with community goals.
  • Lead the hiring process, budget planning, and scheduling for education-related roles within the VGFN.
  • Collaborate with the FNSB and community committee to enhance the educational system under Section 17 agreements.
Curriculum Development and Cultural Integration:
  • Drive the development and implementation of culturally relevant curriculum that incorporates Vuntut Gwitchin knowledge, language, and traditions.
  • Plan and oversee the execution of cultural camps and on-the-land programs in partnership with the school.
Strategic Development and Jurisdictional Expansion:
  • Expand VGFN’s jurisdictional influence over education by working with the FNSB, Yukon legislation, and Section 17 agreements.
  • Advocate for and secure post-secondary funding and educational resources to support students' academic journeys.
  • Develop and implement community-based training programs to build local capacity and empower residents.
Community Engagement and Committee Involvement:
  • Participate actively in the FNSB community committee, contributing to the establishment and recruitment processes.
  • Foster strong relationships with parents, Elders, and other community members to ensure the educational programs reflect community needs and values.
  • All other duties as assigned.
What You Bring:
  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in education, Indigenous Studies, or a related field is required.
  • A master’s degree in education, Educational Leadership, or a similar discipline is preferred.
  • Coursework or certification in Indigenous Education, Curriculum Development, or Educational Administration is an asset.
  • At least 5-7 years of experience in educational leadership, including program management and staff supervision, preferably within an Indigenous community or similar context.
  • Demonstrated experience in curriculum development, particularly in integrating Indigenous knowledge and cultural practices.
  • An in-depth understanding and deep appreciation for Indigenous People and their history, culture, traditions, and languages.
  • A strong desire to uplift and support our community.
  • Providing advice and recommendations to senior decision-makers.
  • Experience working in an Indigenous northern community is an asset.
