About the Role
Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of youth and supporting their educational journey? Reporting to the Manager, Education and Culture, this role provides essential support to Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation (VGFN) students in Old Crow. As an advocate and liaison, you'll coordinate services that assist students, parents/guardians, and school personnel, fostering a positive and collaborative environment in the school. Your efforts will have a lasting impact on the well-being of the community's youth. What we offer:
- $36.57 - $54.85 per hour/per annum - Band 1 (Based on education & experience)
- Flexible Work Hours: Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation offers flexible working hours. Employees may choose to work 65, 70, 75, or 80 hours biweekly (some guidelines, consultation and approvals will apply)
- 4% Northern Community Remoteness Allowance for employees residing in Old Crow full-time.
- 4% Northern Travel Allowance for employees residing in Old Crow full-timesome text
- 4 weeks vacation to start plus two weeks paid time off over the Christmas season

What You Will Do:
- Assist students in setting goals and creating educational and recreational plans, encouraging their progress and participation.
- Identify emotional, social, recreational, cultural, and spiritual needs of students and make recommendations to the Education team.
- Lead and mentor students in integrating cultural knowledge and skills into their learning (e.g., land activities, mechanical skills, traditional beading, sewing, cooking, etc.)
- Ensure students are supported and their wellbeing is of utmost prioritysome text
- Promote awareness of VGFN culture among school staff and students, sharing cultural knowledge.
- Collaborate with school staff to organize special events both at the school and on the land.
- Provide academic support, offering tutoring and homework assistance as needed.
- Support the coordination of workshops and activities that enhance students’ learning experiences and personal development.
- Build trusting and collaborative relationships with students, parents/guardians, and school staff to create a supportive network for student success.
- Track student progress and provide regular updates to the Education team to ensure that each student's needs are met effectively.
What You Bring:
- Certification or a combination of relevant training and experience in education support/services.
- Experience in supporting students in an educational and mentoring capacity.
- Proven ability to integrate traditional and cultural beliefs into student learning and experiences.
- Skilled in operating on-the-land equipment, such as snowmobiles and ATVs, with knowledge of camp setup and camp procedures and protocols.
- Knowledge of Yukon First Nation education regulations, priorities, and services.
- Proficiency in computer programs, including Microsoft Office.
- Experience working in a remote, indigenous community is an asset.
- Successful completion of pre-employment verification, including a Criminal Records Check with a Vulnerable Sector Check.
- Ability to assess issues and concerns with a positive and solution-oriented mindset;
- Ability to act as a role model and advocate, youth feel supported and are engaged in educational and learning pursuits;
- Ability to create a trusting and collaborative relationship with students, parents/guardians, and school staff;
- Ability to ensure cultural expertise is embedded and promoted in the school;
- An in-depth understanding and deep appreciation for Indigenous People and their history, culture, traditions, and languages.
- A strong desire to uplift and support our community.
- Experience working in an Indigenous northern community is an asset.
- First Aid Certification.
