About the Role

Reporting to the Lands Manager, the position will enhance VGFN’s capacity to effectively contribute to processes to accelerate completion of outstanding work on protected areas in VGFN’s traditional territory, as well as participate in future protected area planning. The position will focus on areas identified as priorities by VGFN, including Dàadzàii Vàn Territorial Park, Ni'iinlii Njik Territorial Park and HPA, and Nan Thok Natr’iniin’aii (Vuntut National Park). The role will focus on information gathering and sharing, to be integrated into protected area processes, as well as to increase long-term capacity to address protected area planning and implementation into the future. The Lands Technician will collaborate with other partners, such as Parks Canada, Yukon Government, and other Yukon First Nations and Indigenous governments, to prioritize VGFN self-governance of protected areas within the Traditional Territory. The Lands Technician will work closely with community members to identify ideas to enhance community connections with the protected areas in the Traditional Territory and organize programs to bring citizens into those areas.

What We Offer
  • $54.85 - $67.04 per hour/per annum (Based on education and experience)
  • Employees will work 65 hours biweekly.
  • 4% Northern Community Remoteness Allowance for employees residing in Old Crow full-time 
  • 4% Northern Travel Allowance for employees residing in Old Crow full-time
  • 4 weeks’ vacation to start plus two weeks paid time off over the Christmas season

What You Bring:
  • A diploma in natural or renewable resources management, land management, environmental studies or science, or an equivalent combination of experience and training. 
  • Knowledge of resource management, and ecological sustainability principles and practices to lead inspections, surveys, and projects. 
  • Experience managing conservation or natural resource programs, including strategic planning and evaluation; in an indigenous community is an asset. 
  • Ability to conduct fieldwork year-round in diverse seasonal conditions, handling extreme temperatures, precipitation, and winds in all seasons.
  • Ability to travel for training, attend meetings, and access remote areas of the Traditional Territory.
  • Past experience living in and supporting the operations of remote field camps.
  • A history of working with and engaging the public in Indigenous communities.
  • Awareness and appreciation for Vuntut Gwitchin history, culture, traditions, and languages, including the Final Agreement.
  • A commitment to Indigenous self-determination and sovereignty.
  • A strong desire to uplift and support our community.
  • Experience working in an Indigenous northern community is an asset. 
  • Positive and engaging interactions with colleagues and the public.
